Campaign

We need to encourage every store which stocks plants and compost to become a peat-free organisation. This includes garden centres, supermarkets, DIY stores and independent stores.

Using social media:

Here's some suggested content to ask your local store to go peat-free and an image you can use in your post:

[@ your local store], why do you still sell peat-based compost and plants grown using peat? Join the peat-free movement for our wildlife and planet. #ForPeatsSake

Emailing your local suppliers:

Let your local plant and compost supplier know that you care about this issue by writing to them. Here's some suggested content:

Dear [insert name],

I am writing to ask you to become a peat-free organisation. Peat bogs are a key habitat and carbon store which is being irreversibly destroyed. Peat is stripped from bogs, packaged into plastic sacks and used for compost in our gardens and pot plants.

We cannot afford to continue enabling such destructive gardening practices. In the UK alone, 3 billion litres of peat are used to make garden compost every year and it can take a whole year for peat bogs to build up by 1 millimetre. Given that we are currently causing the sixth mass extinction and facing a climate emergency, we have no time to waste in resolving this issue.

You could lead the way for large organisations by becoming peat-free and only stocking plants grown using peat-free compost and only stocking peat-free composts.
